Battle of the Books is a reading program sponsored by the Glenview Public Library. Fourth and fifth grade students from the various area schools are eligible to participate. Students form teams of four and read books from a selection prepared by the Glenview Public Library. Beginning in late January, a series of meets will be held. At these meets, the teams will be asked questions about the books on the reading list. A set number of points is awarded for correct answers. The members of the five top-scoring teams will have their names engraved on a plaque to be hung in the Children's Room at the Glenview Public Library. This year we have over one hundred students from Hoffman School participating in the program!
How Much Reading is Involved?
This year's list consists of a selection of 32 books. Our usual practice is to divide the list among the four team members. Therefore, each team member is responsible for reading eight books. These books are available at the Glenview Public Library and the Hoffman LRC. Reading 32 books may seem like a lot, but keep in mind that the children have three months to read these before the first meet is held.
How Much Time is Involved?
Each team will be asked to participate in one meet sometime in late January and continuing throughout February. The Glenview Public Library is responsible for scheduling the meets and will notify the teams of their meet dates. Meets will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the Glenview Public Library. It is essential that all team members participate in their meets. The youth services librarians at the Glenview Public Library will mail schedules of the meets in
January. If there is a conflict, please contact the Glenview Public Library
(729-7500). If a team does not appear on their scheduled date without advance
notice, that team will forfeit the chance to participate in the program.
After all meets have taken place, the Glenview Public Library will host an
awards celebration for everyone who participated. All participants will receive
an item of recognition at the party.
