Writers' Workshop

The Writers’ Workshop Program

Writers’ Workshop is a program run through the Hoffman School Learning Resource Center to give 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students an opportunity to create an original piece of writing.

Any type of original writing may be submitted such as essays, short stories, or poetry. Illustrations are optional.

Due Dates

All participants must submit a first draft of their work by Friday, February 3, 2006. These should be typed, if possible. The first drafts will be read by the Reading Committee, a group made up of Mr. Walther and teachers from each grade level. A few recommendations will be made before they are returned to the writers on Friday, February 17. Then parents will have the opportunity to review the writing with their children and help them make necessary changes before the second draft is submitted to the Learning Center. Parents will be asked to sign forms indicating that they have read their child’s entry and have helped them with spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Second drafts must be submitted to the Learning Center by Friday, March 3. Second drafts will be accepted only if accompanied by a form signed by a parent. These drafts will be read thoroughly by a teacher on the Reading Committee. Recommendations will be made so that students can prepare their final copy. The second drafts will be returned to the students on Friday, March 17.

When the drafts are returned, the writers should look over the recommendations made by the Reading Committee, check the spelling and punctuation very carefully one more time, and prepare the final copy.

Final copies must be submitted to the Learning Resource Center by Friday, April 7, 2006. Again, final copies should be typed, if possible. Remember, it is important to have an entry that is well written and handsomely presented. Each entry must have a cover.

Completed works will be read and assessed on the basis of originality, quality of writing, and overall look of the finished product. All participants who turn in a finished product will receive a certificate of participation.
