ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE

  A Note from Miss C:

With our winter program being a smashing success, I must say BRAVO to all of the students of Hoffman School! A job very well done! I look forward to the 5th grade musical we have planned in May! That said, we have jumped right back into routine in drama since the show has ended. The students have all started brand new units and seem very excited to get back to the basics!

The fifth graders dove into the script writing unit starting off creating scripts about how cavemen might have discovered fire! They had a blast making props, grunting their lines, and creating amazing ways in which fire might have first been used.

The fourth graders are starting a unit on character study. We will be discovering how voice, personality, movement, costume, and emotion can create different characters on stage.

The third graders started a unit on drama basics. They have spent the last few classes learning the different names for stages and the stage directions an actor must know to perform.

Be sure to ask your children to share their upcoming projects with you as we move further into these units!

3rd Grade

The third grade has been working hard on learning the types of stages and different stage directions for actors to know. Our next section of work will focus on casting. Students will learn how directors make their decisions of who should be what character in their productions. The students will casting directors in a fictional play! Next, we will be learning about the importance of rehearsal and warming up. The students will study tongue twisters and practice them with a partner to prepare to perform for the class. Soon we will begin a new play called Blame it on the Wolf. The students will be performing, creating scenery, and picking out costume to suit their role. The grading rubric for this performance is below.

4th Grade

The students in fourth grade are beginning character studies. We discussed the different things actors can do to become someone else on stage. The students decided the most importand were: voice, appearance, movement on stage, emotions, and personality/attitude. They will be creating their own character. They will list personality and physical traits about this character, name the character, draw a picture, and finally write a short story about this character. You will find the grading rubric for this assignment below.

5th Grade

The fifth graders are beginning a unit that tends to go through the end of the year. The students will learn how to create scripts, the form to write them in, and how to present them out loud to each other. There will be many rubrics and due dates. The students will start by creating a skit in groups about how they think fire was first discovered. They will then move on to writing scripts in groups about characters they know from other stories. Imaine The big, bad, wolf, meets Darth Vader. Next, they will re-write the ending of a story we read in class and perform it for the class. Finally, they will be writing a script by themselves using all the skills they learned about script writing earlier in the unit!
